In this post I will cover several aspects regarding shuttering design. One thing people often struggle with after they have purchased their home siding or other construction products like trim, molding, windows & doors, is knowing what type and color combination would be the most appealing.
After years of working with clients across Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri, here are some tips I’ve learned along the way. These tips apply whether you’re going through your first house or upgrading the exterior of your current property. 1. Consider Your Style & Personality:
Before choosing colors for your shutters, take note of any architectural details in your homes’ exteriors, including dormer peaks, bay windows, arches, columns, door frames, chimneys, turrets, gables and finials. Once you decide which style resonates with you, keep in mind where these pieces will eventually line up around your house — especially near the front and sides. For instance, if you live in a stately old Victorian home, consider matching shutters to the architecture of each section of your porch.
2. Keep A Budget In Mind While Decorating:
When deciding how to spend your precious decorating dollars, it helps to set aside $300-$500 per window for materials and labor costs. If you plan ahead enough, this amount should provide ample options. However, the cost of buying your preferred styles could run anywhere from just under $50-$100 apiece depending upon size. If you go out and buy every single style you see, then chances are, you’ll end up spending significantly more than initially planned.
3. Start Small & Build Upwards:
If you already own trim or moldings, you can use those items for the majority of your project while adding additional detail once you find the ideal material combination. The same goes for windows and doors; purchase them separately, install them together and only then begin selecting specific hardware for everything else. As each piece is added, try to stay consistent in terms of style, height, width and shape of panels, and overall appearance.

This post goes through some key differences between wood shutters versus vinyl shutters. We talk about why people tend to go with both materials and which is better for each material.
Some of these shutters include aluminum roller, fiberglass reinforced polymer slat, louvered doors and windows, sliding patio door systems, glass block windows, single hung windows, operable screens, wooden lattice panels, glass panel window systems, and many other types as well.
What makes them different? Well, the main difference between a wood frame and a vinyl framed system will be the size and shape of the gliding panes. A standard wooden frame uses either 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch thick plywood. While a typical vinyl framer will use thin pieces called “vinyl sheets”. Each type usually requires specific tools depending upon the style of frames they come with. For example, vinyl sashes must typically slide along rails attached inside the exterior walls. Wooden window hardware should ideally attach flush against the framing members while vinyl hardware is designed to fit behind the framing boards. Also keep in mind that vinyl framing tends to be less expensive than wood due to economies of scale. However, this makes vinyl products generally lower quality than traditional wood products. If you prefer something durable but aren’t willing to pay top dollar then vinyl is probably the way to go. But if cost isn’t necessarily a concern then wooden vinyl composite shutters would work just fine. As far as the actual shutter construction are concerned, most of the wood shutter manufacturers will offer a wide range of styles including vertical and horizontal framing options. They are available as double hung, fixed tilt, roll down, pivot, hinged, retractable and casement models. Most importantly, however, every model includes high efficiency triple plys that help cut energy costs significantly without compromising durability. The same cannot really be said of most vinyl shutter brands which often feature flimsy single ply constructions. These shutters only allow heat and air to escape and therefore tend to result in costly heating bills. They also tend to warp easily leading to poor sealing which lets the weather get under the coverings.

In this guide, I will be teaching you some basic terminology behind Shutter Installation and what types of shutters work for our great state. If you take nothing else away from this page, please remember to always consult with an experienced certified installer and builder before you install anything.
My focus here isn’t really installing but rather just some general information about quality shutters across various price points including what type of material you should get for these different price ranges. We’re going through each section and briefly describing them

Not only does this help us understand what goes well together while keeping costs down, but it will also help us decide which materials best suit our needs, weather they be for doors, windows or both.
What Is A “Vent” Window?:
These come with a few special requirements since a vent window requires ventilation somewhere close by since otherwise condensation begins to form inside the home during hot summer months. So depending on where your exterior walls face and where the roof overhang extends, you’ll either want to consider having vents installed outside near those areas along with additional insulation or possibly adding air conditioning units to keep things nice and cool in warmer climates. Venting tends to run anywhere from $100-$500+ per opening and this cost depends mainly on what size the openings are made to be and how many are used or required. A single large opening could easily cost upwards of $1K+ whereas a couple small openings could cost less than half of that amount (or less).

With the rise of home automation and other energy saving gadgets, many people today use these products because they save them electricity, gas & water bills each month.
When a homeowner replaces window shutters, he gets better security, greater privacy, improved curb appeal, enhanced comfort during summer months and better insulation against heat loss in wintertime. And since most homeowners will replace the existing windows with double glazed windows anyway, installing new blinds, shades and/or drapes to match the style of the current siding won’t cost nearly the same amount of money as replacing just the window frames.
In some cases, it’s possible to install California shutters without removing old exterior trim. Our team has had great success doing this with vinyl clad homes. For example, take a closer look at the photo below which shows an original brick front door flanked by aluminum sided house. There is no problem installing California shutters inside those walls, even though the frame looks like it was built years ago, and the doors look as good as ever. A lot depends upon whether the framing of the door jambs is attached into the wall studs (most commonly referred), or into concrete blocks (less common). If neither case applies, then simply cover the top edges of the door frame with plywood strips cut to width to keep dust away from the sill plate before nailing the shutters onto the outside surface of the jamb. Once installed, you’ll find that California shutters will provide excellent protection for the glass panes while allowing plenty of light through the panels.
However, if you happen to live in a historic community where the building codes stipulate that the entire building must be replaced, then it’s probably going to cost you several thousand dollars to remove everything and rebuild it before you can put anything back down again, including installing new gutters, rainwater drains and flashing.
Before choosing the proper type of hardware to hold the shutters in place, consider what size of paneling you would prefer, and remember to measure the distance between the window pane and the outer edge of the bottom track along both sides. Then you will know exactly how much space you will need available for the mounting screws.

1. When installing windows (or doors), be aware of some window manufacturers who prefer “one size fits most” approach for sizing and measuring the frame openings, which could result in substandard installations and products that fall apart quickly. Make sure you shop around and ask questions regarding the installer’s qualifications, experience, history and references (the better companies will provide them). If something seems amiss- like they aren’t providing adequate measurements/photos, having a bad attitude towards the job, charging higher rates than normal, asking for extra payments upfront, refusing to answer common customer service requests, then walk away. Ask friends & family members to help find reputable installers through reviews, recommendations, word of mouth and community forums—and take note of their experiences.
2. For those seeking professional services, always hire contractors licensed, insured, bonded and experienced in residential construction work. Most importantly, insist upon written estimates outlining exact costs including materials and labor plus extras like warranties. Avoid unscrupulous subcontractors because they generally charge exorbitant prices (often 10 times markup above actual cost) due to poor oversight and customer satisfaction. Be wary of contractors claiming expertise without proof via certifications; only experts should carry certificates and licenses for various trades. Avoid unskilled workers who offer quick fixes. A good contractor will provide accurate information, clearly specify all terms, and explain his role before starting work. He’ll communicate regularly during project completion, keeping clients updated until each task is complete and the entire job meets expectations. And he won’t stop delivering quality until satisfied customers tell him so.
3. One major factor determining longevity of shutters is proper venting to allow air circulation inside. Ventilation holes must be small enough to prevent insects and other pests from flying inside homes but large enough to remove moisture buildup to avoid mold growth. Always keep this in mind when selecting vents since it isn’t typical to place ventilation outside the home. Keep in mind that larger ventilation holes typically cause water vapor condensation on surfaces nearby, possibly dripping onto adjacent surfaces like flooring, walls and ceilings. So unless you enjoy humid living spaces near windows, select smaller vents close to the exterior siding or use fans instead.
