If you decide to go with traditional shutters, the first thing you’ll notice is that they come standard in the color grey. First, it helps to plan ahead.

Wood shutters come from sustainable forests around the world – most commonly cedar & pine lumber grown in North America. However, some timber companies use recycled shipping pallets made of corrugated cardboard. They tend to be thicker than vinyl which makes them better insulators against heat and cold. Most woods will naturally expand slightly under conditions of temperature variation; however they contract when exposed to moisture like rain. Because of this property called hygroscopy, wood shutters will swell during periods of high humidity and shrink back again once dry weather returns. These variations occur slowly enough that wood shutter systems rarely fail due to movement. However, care must be taken because these changes may cause sagging or warping over long periods of years. Slight bowing/crowning occurs over many seasons if proper attention isn’t given to preventative maintenance.
Vinyl shutters, on the other hand, are generally thinner and less durable. They’re typically made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a petroleum derivative that’s used widely across building products including floor tiles, shower curtains and window shades because it resists cracking and fading. Unlike typical wood shutters, PVC won’t ever break down completely nor does it “breathe,” allowing water vapor to seep through cracks in your windows without causing dampness inside. But just like wood windows, vinyl ones should always receive yearly upkeep to maintain smooth operation. If properly maintained, vinyl shutters could live several decades with minimal wear. However, the materials themselves aren’t 100% impervious; UV rays penetrate thin films but cannot damage underlying substrates like wood. Over long exposure times (like those found in sunlight) they’ll gradually fade until they become unreadable.
For homeowners who prefer the natural beauty of stained wooden shutters, you’d first consider finding a reputable installer capable of installing premium wood shutters. Then you’ll have to select a stain color carefully. Avoid going bold colors like teal blue or burnt orange—these hues often wash away after only a few months. Instead opt for subtle browns, light grays, tans, ochers or whites that stay beautiful without needing retouching every five minutes.

If you are considering installing shutters on your home, condo or office building, I recommend starting early and doing some research first.
There are several different types of products available on the market today, each offering varying benefits and drawbacks. If you aren’t familiar with these options, it’s worth taking some time to learn about them ahead of time. Here are our top tips for choosing the right type of window coverings for your property:
1. Understand what you’re trying to achieve: Do you just want something aesthetically pleasing? Or do you want privacy? Or both? These considerations will help narrow down the field to only those products that work well for you and your needs.
2. Consider the weather conditions for which they’re designed: If your area experiences extreme temperatures, be aware that certain materials won’t perform as well during hot and cold seasons—and vice versa. For example, vinyl siding tends to warp, peel, and crack under intense heat; while aluminum windows tend to rust over long periods of time.
3. Make sure you understand the maintenance involved: Some products come with warranties while others offer lifetime protection against fading and warping. And many come ready for DIY installation.
4. Find a reputable company with experience: A quality installer should carry insurance, have proper licensing, and use appropriate safety standards. They’ll also provide detailed information on the materials used, including warranties.
5. Be prepared to pay: Depending on the size of your project, costs vary significantly between brands and manufacturers. The good news is that most products can be found affordably through retailers like Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, or Walmart.
6. Ask questions: Don’t be afraid to ask a salesperson to show you samples. This will allow you to see exactly what you get, and you’ll be better positioned to determine whether or not this material would fit well in the space you’ve planned for it.
7. Check the return policy: Most companies will accept returns within 30 days of purchase, but be sure to read the details carefully and find out what happens if the goods arrive damaged or defective.

I will be updating this blog every 2 years until I am no longer able to keep track of the latest technology & innovation in California shutters.
In 2021 I wrote a guide explaining the current state of the art California Shutters industry. By June 2019 many things had changed, including:
California had passed Proposition 65 laws requiring manufactures to disclose products containing chemicals known to cause cancer (or birth defects). Many manufacturers had already begun changing how they designed/manufactured their products; this made choosing which brands was challenging. Additionally, most homeowners found DIY install procedures frustrating because of inconsistent recommendations and unclear instructions. A few companies began providing custom shutters for sale through dealerships, but these tended to focus heavily on vinyl rather than wooden shutters – Vinyl being considered the “premier choice” among residential clients, however, did NOT offer quality, consistency, nor value for money. As the market evolved the demand became too great (some estimates suggest a $30B Industry today), so many different brands entered the market offering similar designs and prices only differing slightly in aesthetic design / materials used, as well as price point.
This resulted in homeowners spending far more time researching brands and options before purchase, instead of actually enjoying the benefits of owning a window treatment. So much information can lead people down roads that aren’t necessarily correct for them and ultimately leads to dissatisfaction, especially given the high costs involved in making modifications to existing windows.
Some manufactures continue providing custom built units and wood shutters for sale, yet the majority still prefer selling prefabricated models that are easier for customers to understand rather than installing themselves. Because some homeowners find DIY installations daunting, these types of California Shutters tend to attract those who wish to avoid having to commit to home improvement projects. However some, like myself, believe that doing it yourself could provide better value long term for both customer AND installer experience.
To help homeowners get maximum value for their investment without going overboard on expenses, I created my own research project.

This post was written as part of my ongoing effort to document our experiences installing custom shutters in various cities. We wanted to give people ideas on what they should consider and ask questions that will hopefully help them get the most value out of their investment.
There is no perfect system but this guide will be updated periodically because there isn’t always “right” info in this space.
