Wood shutters provide a classic exterior solution which will appeal to most homeowners: they block winter sun while letting in warmer light through during sunny summer days. But because they come made of real wood — like oak, cedar, redwood, or maple — they’re subject to moisture damage and rot, especially along edges, baseboards, and corners. Most manufacturers recommend replacing wooden patio doors every few years since many of them contain moisture pockets. With proper care, however, outdoor wooden shutters can be maintained indefinitely without much work required. On hot, humid summers, some owners leave windows cracked slightly open to allow air circulation across their glass panels. If there isn’t sufficient cross ventilation, the heat inside could quickly rise beyond tolerable levels, pushing closed and sealed shutters back open again. Some people consider this “thermal massing,” and it can help keep your home cooler than neighboring houses that close off their patios completely. For other homes, vinyl shutters hold up better outdoors, as long as your area experiences enough rainfall.
