When I was working at my first job out of college I noticed many homes had these things called shutters installed on them. I would often be tasked with installing them myself which is why this post will discuss some common terms related to installing them in the home.
In order to install shutters properly they must be measured accurately to ensure the fitment is correct for each individual window.
There are several types of measurements that should be taken while measuring and calculating the overall size of the window. These include; height above sill level, width of opening, depth of the window sash track, distance from bottom of trim piece(if present), trim pieces, and head jamb/wall stud measurement. After taking these dimensions it is then possible to calculate the total length of the blinds. All of these factors help determine whether or not the proper amount of material needs to be used during construction and installation.
For example, if you measure a 4×6 foot window and find that it measures 12 inches wide in both directions but only 8 feet long than you can assume that 1 inch equals 2 square feet of coverage. For every 4.5 square feet of glass it will take 3/4 inch blinds to cover the entire window. Therefore, for this particular window you would use 12 x.875 = 10 squares per side. Then, multiply those numbers times the required total length of the blinds and divide the result by 3.75 giving us the approximate amount of blinds that you need to purchase. If we apply this equation to our previously mentioned example we get approximately 17 blinds per unit. We could go ahead and cut these down in half because we know a typical louvered design requires 7 blinds. So after cutting these units we end up with 8.25 blinds being ordered. Once we complete these calculations it is recommended to check these figures against similar measurements made by previous owners of the house. Doing research on houses of comparable sizes helps prevent mistakes and saves time in the final stages of ordering materials.
