I was recently contacted by someone who wanted some information on installing their custom designed shutters. They had purchased them through a company called “Shutters By Design” in San Francisco, California. I am always interested in hearing stories like these because they show me something about my industry that I didn’t realize existed. So without further ado here is this person’s story.
This gentleman had purchased his custom shutters from a company named ‘Shutters by Design’ located near downtown SF, California. After receiving the order he received a phone call asking him if he could come see a demonstration of the shutters being installed. He said yes but only after being told that if he did not go he would be billed $200 per hour for labor charges. When he arrived at the location the guy showed him around, explained everything and then took him back to their workshop/showroom area. Once inside he noticed several large windows and doors had already been removed by the installer and replaced with shutters. He looked around and noticed several other shutters being installed, each in various stages of completion. He was amazed to discover that they could have finished the job the day before but instead chose to wait until today. As soon as the work began he realized why – it was raining outside.
He asked how long the project usually takes to complete and was informed that the average install takes approximately 5 hours. At first he thought this was a little high but decided to keep it to himself and just observe. During the demo he saw several shutters being attached by hand. Then a few minutes went buy while another worker used a drill to fasten the next section. He watched as shutters were hung on both sides of the window frame. Next came the most interesting part; a roll out ladder which allowed the workers access to hang the top row of shutters. Finally the last piece was added – a roller blind to match the existing ones, making it appear seamless. All in all this guy spent close to 2 hours observing, taking notes, asking questions and finally left satisfied with his purchase.

So while we still love to recommend our classic fiber glass and screen options it’s no longer the standard we feel everyone should expect.
