LOOKING FOR California Shutters? WE CAN HELP!
We decided to take a trip through The Wood Preserve Company archives again…and found these photos taken during our visit back in early 2017 — one of our favorite spots around town! If you’re familiar with our products then you’ll see the similarity between the shutters installed in both locations — which made them extra special because they represent projects we did together over 5 years ago!!! It was great seeing how the same project looked 3 times over, and then comparing those installations to other projects completed since — including new ones we’ve recently added to our website. So keep reading for updates and changes!!
(Note: Our shutters aren’t the only items available via The Wood Preserves Co.; check ’em out!)
If you love what we do and would like to order a few custom built screens for yourself or someone else — please feel free to use our contact form and ask us about pricing and availability!! And remember, we offer complimentary shipping anywhere in North America for orders $99+ total ($75 for less than 1’x2′ doors).
But enough about business (or lack thereof), let’s get real talkin’: what have YOU noticed lately??? I mean, besides everything being bigger?? Or better quality?! Oh and a little thing called “smart homes”? Anyway, here are a couple examples of recent client work we’ve finished up:
I hope you enjoy checking out this gallery of our latest “project” and our newest addition, and thank you once again for checking out our articles! Until next time my friend….
Cost of California Shutters in Ajax Ontario
What Size Do I Need? For the most part, a standard 8ft x 10ft bay window requires approximately 4-6 panels per side to cover them completely, though some types of windows only use 3 panels per side; therefore, they would require fewer panels than a traditional 10ft x 12ft bay window. If this is not enough coverage, then a 10 ft wide version would be necessary, but it would cost extra money because each panel costs $2,000+ per foot.
So, if you require additional coverage, consider buying multiple windows and placing them closer together. For example, a 9′ x 13′ window covering the width of 2 bays and 1 row on 10 feet high windows would equal 3 total panels which equals 5 for every single 8ft length.
How Do They Work? As previously mentioned, shutters typically require 3-4 panels. Some manufacturers offer a higher percentage of solid glass while other manufacturers use clear vinyl or polycarbonate sheeting instead of plywood. A shutter must be able to withstand winds above 70mph in order to perform adequately in windy locations like Southern California so they cannot simply have thin veneer or plastic sheets on top of the wooden frame without reinforcing it. The thicker the better! However, thinner materials still work well since they allow light and air through.
For those wanting more security, California Shutters offers products with a reinforced steel backing on certain models. Most companies charge anywhere from $600-$1,200 dollars per door for the addition of the reinforcement depending upon the thickness of the metal used and the style of closure desired. Another common feature found in premium quality shutters is the weather resistant locking system located either on the inside or outside of the opening and the ability to roll the window down easily. Additionally, there should be no visible holes in the exterior of the shutter allowing rainwater and insects to enter the home.
Are These Available Online? Yes.
WHAT ARE California Shutters?
California Shutters vs Traditional Wooden Shutters
•Both types of shutters offer similar levels of weatherproofing. Both provide superior protection against moisture penetration, insects, dust accumulation and UV rays. And because both are made mostly of real wood, each type naturally protects their surrounding environment.
However, California Shutters have several advantages over standard-sized wooden shutters. They’re typically cheaper than the traditional style. Plus, these shuttering products come ready-made with hardware already installed. All of this makes them easier than traditional shutters to install. They also tend to be smaller, making them easier to customize according to homeowner preferences.
•While both types of shutters offer high insulation qualities, California Shutters excel in keeping out heat during cold nights and warm days, while providing better insulation than conventional shutters against hot summers. As a result, they help cool down houses faster — especially those who live in warmer climates like Southern US states. For instance, according to studies conducted in 2012, California Shutters helped reduce energy costs by up to 20 percent in Arizona and Florida.
In addition, some manufacturers produce special versions of California Shutters designed to provide maximum solar efficiency.
Finally, some California shutters are available with integrated windows that allow light through the openings. If a window isn’t integrated with the shutter or frame, then the window must be kept closed at night. If this feature is necessary in order to keep warm air circulating around a sleeping person, then the cost savings could be substantial, considering the fact that an average single family home spends approximately $300 per year cooling itself.
WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT CALIFORNIA SHUTTERS •They work great outdoors and indoors.
•Many manufacturers design them specifically for residential usage.
Ajax’S #1 California Shutters MANUFACTURER

My staff has helped me develop training material, tools, and software solutions specifically geared towards the needs of my customers. By working together, we can ensure you get only high quality workmanship in addition to great support and customer service. So whether you are ordering a few hundred dollars of replacement hardware for your old sliding glass doors, installing an entire system including multiple panels for your home or condo building, or simply upgrading your exterior screens, you deserve reliable, consistent, professional support to achieve quality results.
Our Promise: Quality California Shutters, Affordable Pricing
In this post, I will talk through some common questions and answers regarding these products. If you have additional queries about them, feel free to contact me. We would love to help you find the perfect solution for your project or renovation needs.
What is a Cali Shutter? A California Shutter (also known as a Wood Blind or Window Shade in Europe) is essentially a window treatment made out of fabric material that covers part or all of the glass window of a building. It usually includes slats made of wood which allow for ventilation but still protect from the sun and rain.
Why Install California Shutters? When choosing whether to install California Shutters or not, there are several factors to consider. One reason is because these products offer an aesthetically pleasing appearance while providing protection against UV rays and heat gain during summer months. Another benefit of installing California Shutters is their ability to block sunlight in winter months as well. If you live in Southern California, you should install California Shutters on your home or business in order to reduce heat loss. These types of shutters come down automatically during colder weather conditions.
How Much Will Installation Cost Me? Depending on the size of your property, the type of California Shutters you purchase and the complexity of your design, the total cost to install California Shutters could range anywhere from $500-$2,000+ per window. The price varies depending on the type of materials you select, how large the windows are, and how complex the design is.
Do My Windows Need To Be Replaced First? No, it does not. Most homeowners who install California Shutters only replace existing blinds or shades and keep their old ones.
Professional California Shutters Installation In Ajax
I realize that many people aren’t willing to pay premium prices for blinds, which is why many homeowners who live in high demand communities install cheaper options like wooden louvers instead.
But just like the case above, these types of solutions won’t provide protection against extreme weather conditions while also holding up well in the long run. Wooden Louver Blinds are actually made out of thin strips of wood nailed horizontally onto horizontal bars running along each window pane. While these are inexpensive alternatives, customers often report them becoming warped over time due to changing temperatures, humidity changes and sunlight exposure.
Wooden Louver Shades, also known as Roll Up Window Coverings, were designed primarily as temporary coverings used during construction projects to reduce sound, light and heat transfer. Once the project was complete, residents would remove the roll down shades leaving gaps in the wall where the roller shade once sat. Today the trend continues where some companies offer products that will integrate seamlessly into existing walls and ceilings.
Many owners believe that installing wooden slats permanently onto the window frames of their homes increases energy efficiency and helps prevent water penetration by preventing drafts coming into their houses. But according to several California builders and architects interviewed by San Diego Living Magazine, most contractors say that this form of shading does nothing to help save their clients money on heating and cooling bills, since air exchange occurs naturally without the added support structures. Plus, some experts believe this design creates potential safety hazards for older adults suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Flexible Options: If you live somewhere that experiences milder climates, you can use retractable solar screens called Flexi Solar Screens. These are available in five different models ranging from standard polycarbonate designs to custom products created entirely of stainless steel or aluminum. Another type of alternative screen technology is thermal insulated glass.
Motorized California Shutters Ajax
Manual shutters will allow homeowners who like control but prefer not having a window manager worry about changing screens during inclement weather. But they lack flexibility because you must manually program each individual screen every day they are scheduled to operate.
Motorized shutters offer convenience to those wanting just to enjoy the view outside without worrying about setting screens. These are often thought of as being “easy living” and come standard with built in auto scheduling in most cases.
But there is another side effect; many of these shutters come equipped with sensors which automatically raise and lower your windows depending on ambient light levels outside. They typically come with 3 different sensor settings, or “trimming options” allowing them to reduce energy consumption while still providing protection against sun exposure. However this automation comes at a cost because this feature requires power 24/7 making the unit less efficient than manual models if operated on batteries. While there are other brands offering battery powered solar panels some people believe this does little more than increase complexity and costs unnecessarily. For them the tradeoff between comfort and efficiency isn’t worth the extra price.
So what exactly makes a good solar power shutter? There are several other factors to consider besides trimming. One of the most important considerations is size. If you live somewhere sunny enough to warrant installing large patio curtains then you probably won’t benefit from buying a smaller model that only raises the lowest 1″ section of the blind. If you want maximum coverage and maximum security they recommend going all the way up to 5′ tall while keeping the width roughly 60% of their length. As far as color goes, while white shades work well to block visible sunlight they can actually reflect heat back inside reducing the overall temperature of the space. Black and dark green shades tend to absorb rather than scatter light therefore increasing cooling load. Most manufacturers suggest avoiding these darker colors unless installed under a porch ceiling. Lastly price shouldn’t always be the deciding factor either.
Best California Shutters Ajax
There are four main types of shutters that include louvered, roller, plantation, and casement. Each type offers specific benefits depending on its use. For example; Louvers offer privacy while Roller and Casements protect against damage caused by rain showers. So how does choosing among these choices affect them?
What Is A “Curb Appeal Score?”
Before you go ahead installing and having your shutters installed, it’s worthwhile knowing the curb appeal score they stand for. Curb appeal is defined as the way a property appears from the front yard or driveway. It includes factors such as lawn maintenance, house colors, roof pitch, landscape architecture, window coverings, the location, size, design, and condition of the home.
This guide shows how each shutter fits into your project and why it should work well with both modern and traditional designs.
Here’s a quick primer on California Shutter Types
Roller Shutters: These shutters consist of multiple layers of horizontal slats designed to roll horizontally to close windows and doors during inclement weather conditions such as bad storms and heavy rains. They typically come in standard widths ranging from 3 inches to 10 feet wide and come in either single panel or double panel options. Rolled shutters provide security against windblown sand and dust along driveways and parking lots.
Plantation Style Shutters: Plantation shutters can be used for large areas including patio doors and bay windows. Usually made with wooden strips covered entirely with fabric, this type of shutter is ideal for covering larger spaces than roller shutters because the material stretches easily across wider surfaces. One advantage of plantation shutters over other shutter configurations include being easier to clean since they aren’t attached to anything and can remain closed during washing.

Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
(Wood shutters usually cost slightly more than vinyl.)
We did research on these styles so you could easily pick which would be better suited for your home/condominium and still maintain a beautiful aesthetic for years to go by.
1) “Rugged Exterior Style”
This style uses large horizontal slats (made of either wood or vinyl), and a top panel made of solid wood. These exterior shutters are used mostly for outdoor settings, but they are beautiful additions indoors and outdoors — and often times cheaper than buying custom wood windows! They offer lots of natural light while maintaining privacy without having to spend thousands of dollars doing window replacement projects.
2) “Modern Rustic Interior Design Style”
These shutters use small vertical wood slats like mini picture frames (usually four per square foot) placed around the wall. Some are painted while others are stained. When installed correctly, these allow plenty of sunlight inside AND keep the view outside nice & private. Many people install them as a way to hide unsightly holes in walls! If you prefer a classic design that adds warmth, then modern rustic is probably for you.
3) “Tropical Tiled Modern” (also called “Puerto Rican Shutter Trend)
These shutters are similar to #2 above but instead use tiles that mimic those found on many tropical beaches. Most commonly tile colors include white, teal blue, and red orange. These can typically be purchased through retailers like Lowe’s and Bed Bath & Beyond; however, a few specialty shops sell high quality products that match up to the originals.
“We met Marco just over 2 weeks ago. He was meticulous in measuring the windows and doors on our main floor. It was a very pleasant experience. We decided to go with the high end option of California shutters as they complemented the crown molding in our home. Marco’s crew, Tony and Keanu installed the shutters yesterday quickly and efficiently. They are great guys. We are absolutely delighted with how clean, bright and beautiful our home looks. The shutters make a huge difference. We have dealt with a lot of contractors in our various homes, and this was probably the best experience we have had. I highly recommend Marco and his team.”
“I recently had the wood shutters installed by Marco in my 2800 sq ft new built house. Its a corner lot, and there were 33 windows and a patio door to be dressed up by the wood shutters. The price was very competitive and the quality was superb. Marco and his team did a great job and the whole installation was completed in one afternoon. The wood shutters are of good quality, the finishes are smooth, adding great value to the already beautiful house. I am very happy with both the product and the services provided by Marco. Highly recommended.”
