In the summer of 2017, I was working on my first home improvement project ever: installing custom shutters for our livingroom window in Santa Rosa CA. So far I’ve noticed a couple trends in California shuttering…
1-Vinyl Frames are coming back with a vengeance for 2 main reasons…. Vinyl frames keep the air moving better than Wood Frames, therefore making it possible to cool down indoors without opening the windows. However, vinyl frame does not breathe well meaning the indoor/outdoor ventilation gap gets bigger. So it would be advisable to use the window screens (exterior screen only) around vents at least 10 inches thick to eliminate draftiness. For our house, my husband opted to put 3″ drywall screws across each side of the vent hole instead of installing the PVC trim ring. He then used spray foam insulation to seal them closed.
2-California shutters are getting fancier and sleeker and less boring. We got a lot of compliments on the way ours turned out and everyone loved that we didn’t stick to standard colors. Instead it looks like we found a bunch of random pieces on clearance at Target and made a huge collage together. People kept saying “oh my gosh…you made that?!?!” Yeah, well we did that too haha.
