They offer additional benefits of security, energy savings, improved curb appeal, increased insulation, noise reduction, and more.
Shutters are available in various materials including steel, aluminum, fiberglass, vinyl, polycarbonate, composite board, and wood. Each type of shutter has unique qualities, strengths, advantages, disadvantages, and costs associated with each. In this blog post I will be going through some of my favorite tips and tricks of installing great shutters, especially since they tend to be overlooked by many homeowners. Here’s how I install them, along with why I recommend each material/method:
– Vinyl Windows
Vinyl windows come in various colors and styles. When painting vinyl it helps to use spray paint which goes straight onto the surface without leaving brush strokes behind. Painting the window first then applying vinyl creates a perfect edge that seals well against rainwater damage. For this reason, I prefer painted frames over stained ones. However, there a few factors to consider: 1st, you must decide whether you want your vinyl frame painted white, black or another color. 2nd, vinyl windows usually cost twice as much as other types, 3rd, the type of weatherstripping used on vinyl windows tends to wear faster than aluminum so expect less longevity when installed properly, 4th, vinyl windows generally make a loud noise whenever opened. Finally, because of the price tag and possible issues like noisy operation and paint peeling, I would still only suggest vinyl when the homebuyer prefers the appearance of vinyl rather than stain glass or metal frames. As far as maintenance is concerned, the easiest way to clean your vinyl windows is just to wipe down the outside every couple months with a mild soap solution. If the frame gets really dirty, simply take it inside and wash it thoroughly with hot water and detergent. Lastly, never attempt cleaning the inside of these windows; even mild cleaners could cause serious problems.
– Wood Shutters
Wood shutters should always be stained with a dark mahogany stain instead of lighter stains (like light oak, cedar and walnut). Staining prevents sunlight damaging the wood grain and gives it a nicer look overall. Wood shutters are easily customized in terms of style. One tip however to keep in mind when choosing a size is to avoid making them wider than 10 inches wide. Anything past 10 inch width becomes extremely heavy, thus putting added stress on hinges and doorframes. Also, try keeping in mind that thicker shutters require more space than thinner ones. A good rule of thumb is to double the thickness of your opening measurement.
