We recommend either Wood Windows or Aluminum windows over vinyl windows which cost less than half, yet provide no real benefit in terms of insulation value nor sound proofing properties.
In fact, aluminum windows tend to leak air through gaps between metal framing bars making them worse insulators then glass framed windows and vinyl windows. They often come without proper caulk and sealants, allowing moisture to seep underneath, causing rot and mold issues. If you live anywhere near water where water pressure could erode aluminum frames, this problem becomes exponentially greater since the frame will rust away.
Wood windows offer superior acoustic isolation, thermal regulation, privacy and aesthetics, however, their prices range wildly depending on quality/material used and size requirements. Some homeowners who have had experience with wooden windows say that they actually feel like “a wall” and block unwanted outside noises quite effectively. Others who haven’t experienced firsthand these benefits claim they don’t see why anyone would bother paying premium price for wood windows when they already pay high prices for doors and windows.
There are plenty of options available for those who prefer Vinyl Window Frames instead. We suggest choosing a style that looks similar to traditional timber framing. These styles typically include wood lintels and siding boards (which act as trim in most cases). However, they still allow for good ventilation while providing excellent insulation values due to their thickness and density. It is possible to find a vinyl window frame kit made specifically to work with existing trim in order to achieve a seamless transition.
Most manufacturers of vinyl window products also make custom window sizes to fit specific needs.

They typically cost around $40-$60 per panel, but they are a cheaper alternative than aluminum shutters because they can only be ordered online and shipped via common carriers like UPS and USPS. However, you cannot install them yourself unless you are willing to pay someone else to do the job instead.
Roller shutters are another inexpensive choice available in both wood and metal varieties. Metal rollers are generally lighter weight and cheaper than wooden ones. These shutters are easy to handle and move since they slide rather than fold up. Wooden shutter rolls tend to weigh less and are easier to maneuver, especially for DIY projects. Rolled shutter prices range from $25–$150 depending on the size, material and color.
Wooden shutters are also known as “hardwood” or “clapboard” shutters. While these are still the traditional choice, they aren’t always ideal. For example, they do not block the sunlight effectively as other options and are prone to warping due to heat expansion and contraction.
