In this article I will be discussing some of my current projects, including California shutters and custom window treatment options.
We recently did a project where someone wanted a large picture window installed in her front entryway. She was interested in having privacy screens around the perimeter of it but still wanted natural light coming through so she could enjoy watching birds outside.
She decided that she liked the idea of having wooden screen panels that would allow the sunlight while blocking insects and wind noise. So we designed wooden paneling that had a grid pattern on it like this. We then added hardware cloth to the top edge so that people couldn’t walk under them, which made cleaning easier.
Here’s another example of something similar to these, only bigger. For those who are unfamiliar with this style, they’re called “French” doors because they used to use French windows in old houses. Instead of being glass panes inside the frame, they often featured wooden frames instead with decorative latticework or other patterns along the edges. These types of doors also usually came fitted with hinges rather than just sliding open. They tend to fit better in older homes since they aren’t always as well suited to newer construction styles; however, there are ways to install modern versions in modern architecture without compromising functionality.
Another popular type of door is known as a bi-fold door. Rather than opening horizontally they fold back vertically, making storage space behind them accessible. Some models offer optional security screens on both sides of the doorway if desired. Like patio doors, you’ll typically find these kinds of doors in larger households.
California’s climate makes it perfect for installing wood products indoors. Wood is naturally rot resistant, durable, and beautiful, plus it helps insulate rooms against heat loss during hot summers. As such, many homeowners opt to keep their walls filled with solid wood to maintain energy efficiency. If you’ve got enough space available, you should consider filling every square inch with boards, whether it’s drywall, laminate countertops, cabinets, trim moldings, floorboards, shelving, or anything else that fits your needs.

First Question We get Asked is “What type should I buy”?
This question makes me laugh because we sell both Wood Frame & Vinyl Frames. If they already own wooden frame windows then they probably would like vinyl frames or vice versa. So the first thing you need to determine is does your home/condominium allow wood framed shutters or only vinyl shutters? Most building codes today specify either wood framing OR VINYL FRAMES ONLY! Most older homes did not restrict us from installing wood shutters but in most cases those old houses had lead paint issues and are no longer permitted in many areas. Today, almost every single window in the U.S. is required to be covered with vinyl. We still supply traditional wood shutters though as well as faux wood shutters and custom made Shutting Systems in case you prefer them instead of modern vinyl shutters. Some buildings don’t use glass panes either…you’ll find examples of metal mesh screens which are used for privacy purposes. Metal screen, aluminum mesh or other types of material are acceptable choices in certain situations and are less expensive than regular blinds or curtains. But I am talking about wood shutters here.
Next Question We see often is “How big?”
You’re going to love our answer. For the most part you want to size your exterior opening appropriately for the size of the window. When measuring your openings, try putting yourself in the shoes of the person who wants to install the shutters. Don’t forget to take into consideration how the view outside changes through seasons; during Spring/Summer months your yard looks different than Fall / Winter. Also keep in mind that a smaller sized window opening makes the space appear larger. And remember to measure the bottom of ALL THREE SIDES OF THE WINDOW TO BE AVAILABLE SPACE BELOW THE CURTAINS OR SHUTTERS! Once again, we like to say….”Measure Twice….Cut once!” 🙂
