Welcome again fellow shutter enthusiasts!! Today I am covering some tips I would like everyone to keep in mind while installing shutters. As far as the materials go, most of them will be common sense stuff but there is always going to be someone who does something different than the norm. If you are reading this then chances are you already have shutters installed either through us at Shutter Guys or another trusted install company. So lets dive head first into our ultimate guide to installing the best Cali shutters for your milpas home or condo.
1. Measure twice cut once!
This should go without saying but measure twice and cut once!! We recommend making measurements of all four corners of each window sill using a carpenter square. Most people use tape measures but these are often inaccurate because they are not made specifically for measuring windows. Also remember that the dimensions listed on the packaging or website is not necessarily accurate. Always check the actual size against your measurements. The same goes for widths; many companies claim “2×12″ which actually means 2 inches wide x 12 inches long. Again, these numbers are not precise. Always double check the exact sizes. Make sure to include all 4 sides because that’s where trimming happens and sometimes those pieces get lost along the way.

When cutting shutters, try to stay away from sharp edges. Try to avoid having anything protruding from the wall. If possible, have the installer remove that piece completely when installing the door. Be conscious of framing around doors and other obstructions and make note of it during installation. When opening the shutter, make sure nothing gets caught inside. Remember when closing the shutter tight everything must line back up correctly. Sometimes things shift during closing causing issues down the road.
Another good idea is to take pictures. This especially true if it was a DIY project. A picture says a thousand words and it can help save hours of frustration down the road. Just upload the photos onto google drive and send them to shutter guys.
