Others use only certified professional contractors to install their shutters. And some hire independent “do-it-yourselfer” type professionals for installations. Even though it feels good to save money, the end result isn’t always worth risking safety and health issues to save pennies.

If you do a google search for “how to cut plywood siding to fit around windows & doors,” you will find that this information is available online, however, it would probably help us all to have some sort of reference guide handy while trying to accomplish this task ourselves.
For most installations, I recommend measuring twice and cutting once; make certain you don’t go outside of the guidelines given to ensure you get a good install. Once you have figured out the size of the opening you’ve created, you then have to decide whether to cover it entirely in shutters, only half way through the opening or leave the remaining exposed area uncovered. If you opt to leave the remaining uncoated portion exposed, keep in mind that sunlight is the enemy of vinyl and paint. So if possible, always try and protect that section of glass, especially if it faces west or south during warmer months. In fact, I suggest covering every inch of glass with tape to prevent sun exposure and UV fading until you’ve made a final decision about which side(ies) of the building you wish to coat in shutters, i.e., front, back, both sides, etc.
If you are doing double hungs or casements, they must overlap the entire top edge of the building, making them quite cumbersome to handle without proper equipment.
