In this post I’ll talk about my experience installing the most popular window treatment products available today. These will be both vinyl siding shutters and wooden California Shutters. If you’re interested in either of these products then this is going to help provide some insight and tips that should hopefully save you a few headaches come April.
I did get them installed professionally but they wouldn’t tell me which brands they used because “it’s confidential” business information. But after months of research, reading reviews, talking to experts, and testing samples myself I’ve finally identified the top three in market today. So without further ado, let’s take a closer look…
First up is Woodstock. They sell several types including the classic double hung window treatments. Their website claims their shutters are “industry standard”, “the strongest windows coverings on the market”. And while there isn’t really enough info provided to validate those statements there does seem to be solid backing. Not only are there a couple testimonials on Woodstock’s own website but the company was recognized multiple times for outstanding customer service during SHOP conference.
Next is Southern Exposure Window Treatments. While they offer a wider range than just shutters, they focus primarily on custom made shades, blinds, solar screens/drapes, and roller shades. Based on the quality wood slats featured on the website along, with high resolution photos to go along with each style, looks like good quality material as well. Another big perk is that Souther Exposure offers FREE shipping over $100 dollars shipped anywhere inside Canada.
Finally is VELUX International, who offers everything from single panels, sliding windows, plantation shutters, roman shades, drapery, vertical blinds, retractable screen doors, and bi fold doors. Like Woodstock they claim industry standards but unlike that other two companies we found this is backed by actual peer reviewed studies published in scientific journals. According to VELUX the highest performing shutter systems for strength tested had a rating of 3 stars, meaning that they could withstand strong winds up to 190 km per hour. A higher strength level would allow for greater wind resistance.

Wood shutters tend to be thicker than vinyl shutters because they typically feature solid lumber instead of PVC which makes them stronger and less prone to warping under high temperatures. They offer the ability to close windows completely without needing extra hardware while being able to withstand a wide range of weather conditions and temperature fluctuations. While these benefits come with higher initial cost, once installed you will save yourself countless dollars down the road through energy savings due to heat insulation properties. A study conducted by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found homeowners who used wooden shutters had saved anywhere between $40-$150 per summer on cooling or heating costs due to improved air conditioning insulation efficiency. As well, the increased thermal mass of wood products helps keep home interiors cooler during hot days and warmer at night helping prevent utility bills from soaring on those warm sunny days.
One downside to traditional wood shutters is that they must be painted every couple years since natural finishes wear away quickly from exposure to sunlight making them susceptible to fading. If you decide to paint them, remember to use exterior grade paints since most regular household paint won’t hold up against outdoor exposures. Additionally, some manufacturers sell faux finishing solutions like laminate veneers that mimic real wood to help extend life expectancy but they still require painting periodically. Vinyl shutters are thinner than standard wood models so they allow plenty of light to pass through giving rooms a brighter feel, though they lack many of the same weather resistance advantages of timber shutters. Most vinyl siding companies only provide basic window coverings including shades/blinds rather than full shutter systems. However, this isn‘t always true depending on the type of vinyl material that is used. For example, if a company uses polyvinyl chloride (PVC), then you should expect no additional protection other than shade control unless the shutter system is custom made with UV inhibitors in order to protect the vinyl siding from sun damage. Some vinyl options include UV resistant versions of popular brands such as Hunter Douglas to better resist the harmful effects of ultra violet radiation.

California shutters are beautiful doors which cover windows during cold weather months while letting the sun shine through the glass window pane on warmer days. They are commonly installed on exterior walls because they offer both privacy and light control; however, many homeowners install them inside rooms where additional insulation and protection against hot air infiltration is desirable.
In addition to offering privacy and decorating value, these types of door covers are highly energy efficient products that help maintain home temperatures during colder seasons. These unique windows allow heat to escape but prevent outside heat from coming in. Additionally these products will reduce heating costs substantially, keeping your home cooler than without the benefit of this type of covering.
When should I consider installing my own California Shutters?
If you live in areas where winters tend to get extremely warm and dry it makes sense to consider protecting your home windows. Also, windows are often overlooked in terms of insulating property values; therefore adding proper California shuttering could greatly improve curb appeal while saving valuable cash.
