When researching California shutters, you’ll often find them advertised on sites like Amazon where you type either “vinyl” or another keyword search term into the search bar. Today I am going to be covering the three most popular kinds of shutters; Wood Shutters, Vinyl Shutters, and Aluminum Shutters. When choosing shutters, there are some basic things you should consider first and then go from there. Things like how big will the opening be, what material does it have, and the style does they come in.
If you live somewhere that gets weather issues, be aware that some materials won’t hold well against rain. Vinyl will usually work fine but metal ones will tend to rust and warp after a few years. If you live in a cold place you’ll probably want something made for heat resistant surfaces. These won’t warp or get brittle over time and should keep working great. Metal will always be good for places near water because they’re naturally protected from corrosion. Some designs will help prevent damage from windblown debris while providing protection from insects and bird droppings as well. They can often stand up better than vinyl and are less expensive. But remember these shutters aren’t perfect either. A lot of them will still crack or leak during bad storms which is why you might see a warranty against cracking/leaking.
Before installing shutters take measurements of both sides of the window so you know exactly what size openings you need to cut shutters for the entire thing. Measure for width first, since that’s easier, but measure length next. Make those numbers fit perfectly inside each side, plus leave extra space around windows to use if they are larger than usual. Don’t forget to account for trimming and adding gaskets along the edges. Then check the height. Is it tall enough without being higher than necessary? If yes, you shouldn’t worry about cutting shutters taller then necessary. On average 1 inch is enough and can vary depending on climate conditions, house design, and window type. Once you’ve measured everything and taken care of the other details mentioned you just need to decide where to put the hinges.
