What Is A “California” Window Treatment And Why Should My House Have Them?
One of the many questions we get asked every day is whether window treatments qualify as a “California” treatment under the guidelines published by the International Organization For Standardization (ISO), which defines California windows as those that feature vertical bars at least four inches wide running across top, bottom, sides, and end sashes of glass panes along with hardware that meets certain requirements.[1] When shopping around for window treatments, always remember to use only the standard California designations on your labels as well as check your state laws for further restrictions on custom designs/window dressings.[2]
How Do I Measure The Width Of Glass Windows Or Doorways For Installation Of Cali Slides & Panels?
Most shutters come equipped with measuring tape built in, but if you’re buying from a retailer without one it shouldn’t present too big of an issue. Simply measure the width where the bar would sit and then subtract 3cm (or 2.5″) to account for shrinkage when cutting stock down.

1/ A permit is required for each window unit purchased through Shutter Boys. Permits vary depending on which city you live in. You must obtain a Residential Building Inspection License (RBIL). Click Here or call 877-837-7678 for details regarding permits and licensing requirements. All installation requires an RBI license issued by San Diego County, unless otherwise stated.
2/ If installing new windows, please note that a Certificate Of Occupancy is typically only available after all work is complete. In most cases, homeowners cannot receive COO’s until 3-6 business days following final inspection; however, some contractors offer expedited delivery options. Please consult with your contractor prior to purchase. We recommend contacting us via phone before making any purchases.
3/ When working around electrical wiring:
a. Be aware that many windows contain small metal plates on top that cover the wires behind them. These small metal plates should remain intact during installation. If they get knocked loose, contact an electrician immediately for proper repair procedures. Do NOT attempt to remove or replace these plates yourself. Failure to properly reconnect the wire could result in serious injury or death.
b. Some homes also include hidden power outlets under flooring for additional convenience. Be careful not to disconnect those outlets either. Many modern home designs provide built-in receptacles that are designed to operate without interruption. However, if you’re unsure whether a particular outlet is safe to touch, please contact a licensed professional installer for assistance.
4/ Most manufacturers require a minimum height clearance for all installations (except casement styles). You’ll be given specific instructions for your project upon placing an order.

Vinyl shutters require frequent cleaning due to mildew buildup from water intrusion and other factors. They tend to fade after many months exposure to ultraviolet rays which affects both color and texture.
Vinyl shutters also lose their effectiveness quickly since rainwater seeps through seams allowing rot to eat away at the fabric.
