Here’s my favorite roller blind design… The latticed track system is super cool because it lets the sunlight come through without having panels touching each other which makes them way less expensive than other types of vinyl shutters/blinds. These wooden shutters are actually just solid slabs of 3 ply redwood but are installed as though they had vertical tracks going down both sides of the entire width of the opening. These would obviously cost significantly more than typical vinyl or aluminum shutters due to custom milling involved in making these shutters. However, there’s nothing stopping anyone from buying these and have them cut for themselves in order to save hundreds of dollars. These would work perfectly if someone was building a large wall enclosure and wanted a really elegant look where every panel fit closely together…… And finally, the final example of “Best DIY Wood” shows a door style with built in crossbars along top and bottom edges. Again, instead of traditional rails, these are designed to sit flush against the side jambs so they won’t get dirty after years of exposure to rain, snow, dirt & grime……..

I’ve put together this guide because my clients often ask me “Should i install these beautiful wooden shutters”. My answer is always YES, but I’m going to tell them why.
So lets get started first thing’s first in order to buy quality California Shutters for your home or condo you need a professional installer. Here’s 2 main factors you will be considering : Type of panels & Warranty. For type of panels they range form 1/3 inch thick composite board ( which is usually cheaper than solid )to 3/4 inch thick solid lumber. Solid lumbers tend to hold their value better and most people prefer it (but some do enjoy composite boards). Some brands of shutters come standard with composite material while others use solid lumber. Most manufacturers offer both options on their products. When buying shutters I would suggest choosing a company who offers both solid timber and solid fiberglass options along with either a 15 Year Limited Manufacturing Warranty or Lifetime Warranty. A good contractor should already carry insurance coverage through his business license. Also remember that all contractors must file quarterly sales tax reports with your city & county government office that shows the amount you paid for your California shutters. These records will help prove the work was performed & paid for during the state mandated 10% withholding period. The 10% rate is only applicable for items purchased after January 01st 2003. If you live outside the State of Massachusetts you’ll likely pay a different amount and may still receive a refund back via federal income taxes. As far as price goes here is a rough breakdown. Standard Panels 3 x 8 Feet $12-$15 each panel 1x 7 ft.$45 each Panel(8ft x 4′) $35 2X5′ $40 1X7′ $65 Each Side $25.00 Per Door $150.00 Total $450 – $600. So basically a 4 ft high double door costs around $400 plus labor. Of course prices vary depending upon the size of window, style of frame and hardware used.
