Additionally they tend to be less expensive, easier to install, more durable and they come in nearly endless varieties. But does that mean wood is always going to be king? If you’ve got a standard sized home (i.e your living room has 12″w x 18 1/2″h), you should expect to spend somewhere around $150-$225 dollars for materials and labor. Some things we just need to cover upfront costs:
Shutters themselves — They come either made with plastic parts that melt in high wind conditions or real wood, which requires paint treatment and staining, plus of course custom sizing as we discussed above.
Caulking — Since most caulks are very expensive, I prefer vinyl because it lasts longer and isn’t flammable unless exposed to heat or flame during manufacturing. Other types of caulk, especially foam caulks, may actually burn when exposed to fire and other extreme temperatures. They also dry extremely slowly. Vinyl is far easier to work with. Plus it holds things together well without relying on gravity (as many foams). Foam caukls have a way greater tendency to expand in high humidity conditions when left idle for a while, causing air gaps to form between siding boards. Caulks keep everything tight.
Hardware — All of us know that screws are cheap, but we shouldn’t forget to factor in fasteners for sliders and clamps. Those are much higher dollar items. And remember, no metal trim pieces = less material = higher final price.
Installation — Installation involves measuring, cutting & assembly. Most people aren’t handy enough to install their own shutters, however DIY enthusiasts certainly could handle it — though perhaps not perfectly.

Here’s a brief explanation of each method:
Wood Sliders: If you’ve ever looked at sliding doors they’re usually made in 2 parts – the frame, and the panel door
These frames fit perfectly against our home siding and they come in multiple types including
Plywood & MDF (Medium Density Fibreglassboard) or Hardwoods like Red Oak. They are generally less expensive than vinyl windows but offer the same benefits like noise reduction and privacy control. These are generally installed with wooden battens along the bottom edge (called’muntins’). They are commonly used in bathrooms and kitchens because of their clean appearance and ability to slide easily across flat surfaces without scratching walls.
Vinyl Windows: A window unit that uses a plastic skin instead of glass or wood. Because vinyl is lighter then wood it offers many advantages over solid wood products including lower cost, ease of cleaning, no maintenance costs and easier installation due to weight and size. They are typically cheaper than wood windows and often times include energy saving technology. Vinyl windows are available in both fixed and rolling styles and many manufacturers are offering custom designs and finishes that can really stand apart from the crowd. Most vinyl options include aluminum framing and some include masonry style brickwork. The only drawback to these units are that they cannot match the beauty of real timber frame construction and must always be painted.
Custom Woods: Wood clad windows have gained popularity since they provide a similar level of soundproofing to vinyl windows while adding the natural appeal of timbers in a very affordable package. If you’d prefer something with the traditional feel of classic wood framed homes, these are great choices especially if you live in warmer climates.
