WHAT ARE California Shutters?
What exactly are shutters and why should I consider installing them on my home or condo? If you live near California’s beautiful beaches then you’ve probably seen some amazing examples of shuttered homes. These buildings use shutters to keep the ocean breeze away while still allowing natural light to enter through large glass windows.
Shutters come in many different styles but they’re typically made of wood. They range in style from basic wooden slats to ornate designs featuring intricate patterns carved or painted onto wood panels. They can be custom ordered to match almost any décor.
If you decide to install shutters, here are a few things to consider first:
1/ Do I really need them? Most people who live along the coast already have great views of the water. So unless you plan to move soon or would like to enjoy the view without having your home covered up by heavy curtains, shutters won’t provide you with anything extra. If this sounds familiar, then skip down to item #2 below.
2/ How will they impact my property tax bill? Depending on which city you live in and whether your house was built after 1978 (when building codes changed), you could face higher real estate taxes because shutters block sunlight and reduce heat gain. But in most cases, you’ll pay less than $300 per year in additional taxes. And since shuttering costs only around 2% of the total cost of a window replacement project, the savings may easily offset the cost.
3/ How long until they break or rot? Some of the oldest shutters can take decades to deteriorate. Others are designed specifically for coastal climates and are constructed from materials that resist damage caused by rainwater and salt air. But in general, shutters will eventually fade from sunlight exposure and become unsightly. And depending on climate, wood shutters can crack from high winds or dry rot if exposed to excessive moisture.

Wood California Shutters vs. Vinyl California Shutters?
Wood shutters tend to be better than vinyl ones overall because they offer higher quality materials, easier maintenance, and often come with lifetime warranties. Most of them provide energy efficiency ratings; some will block light while letting views through or vice versa.
Vinyl shutters aren’t necessarily bad, but they have tradeoffs — mostly around cost, durability, ease of use, privacy issues, and noise levels. They can get dirty relatively quickly and stain easily because dirt gets stuck inside the seams, which makes cleanup a hassle. Some models can only seal against wind rather than against rain. Other drawbacks include loud squeaks, rattle problems, high water ingress, poor insulation properties, and no guarantees against mold growth.
But wood isn’t perfect either, nor should people expect perfection. A lot of times, wood shuts won’t always fit perfectly flush against walls due to irregularities in trimming work during construction, especially if you install them after framing instead of doing both simultaneously like professionals would do. And sometimes wood shutters just aren’t practical or affordable—we saw this firsthand when installing custom shutters in a residential project near ours back in 2015. But it doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about wood or vinyl—all shutters that meet industry standards fall under the “high strength composite frame category” according to National Fenestration Ratings Council (NFRC) guidelines. If you care more about comfort than aesthetics, then wood shutters could be right for you. (If anything, wooden shutters usually perform better than vinyl in terms of thermal resistance.)
For those who love the idea of having windows but hate the aesthetic appearance of traditional wooden frames, vinyl shutters are probably going to win out again. While they do lack insulating qualities, unlike most other types of window coverings available today, vinyl shutters allow you to customize the amount of visibility you desire between neighbors and passersby, plus the ability to cover every single inch of potential view is huge. Plus, they come equipped with handles, giving homeowners the ability to lift shutters without resorting to tools—a huge convenience.
