WHAT ARE California Shutters?
In this post I will provide some basic information regarding California shutters including why they exist and how they work. After providing that information, I will go through each type of California shutter that exists today and explain which ones work well in certain situations. Finally, there will be a section discussing the most popular options available today.
California Shutters come in several different forms. The first form being Wood Shutters (also known as “Wood Panels”). These shutters consist of wooden panels which cover windows and doors. They usually come standard with 3/8″ thick plywood panels but other thicknesses and materials are possible depending upon customer requests. Some people prefer these types because they offer good privacy while still allowing light inside the home. However, these shutters are expensive because they are made entirely from wood. Another common material used for this purpose is Vinyl Siding. These are much cheaper than wood shutters but they lack many of the benefits offered by wood shutters. For example, vinyl does not allow for natural lighting inside homes which makes them less attractive to homeowners who wish to increase property values. Also, since vinyl siding is only 1/4 inch thick, the homeowner must install multiple layers of shingles (or similar material) to achieve the same protection level as wood shutters. Finally, vinyl siding does not offer the same thermal insulation qualities offered by wood shutters.
Another style of California Shutters are called Roller Shutts which are basically window blinds rolled around rods. While roller shutts can be found in many shapes and colors, their main benefit lies in offering complete control over what goes on outside the house without blocking the view of the outdoors from indoors. This feature gives owners full control over who sees what in case of unwanted intruders and also helps reduce energy bills during the summer months. Another advantage of roller shutts is that unlike other styles of shutters, they can be installed quickly and easily. All you need is a pair of scissors and a measuring tape to cut the roll to size then simply slide them onto a rod in place of the original window sash. Once the roller shuts are in use, the owner just needs to lift a finger to adjust the amount of shade provided.

Apply oil to prevent rust. Check weather conditions before removing covers. If rain is predicted apply anti-fouling treatment after cleaning and replacing the cover. Do not use strong chemicals like bleach. It could damage the paint layer underneath causing staining. Avoid high heat or excessive moisture while maintaining indoor temperatures around 70°F (21ºC). Moisture levels above 60% can cause rot and mold growth. Always close doors and windows tightly for maximum protection.

A single ply sheet is generally used to block the majority of light transmission while thicker multiple plies can effectively eliminate light penetration completely.

But not everyone knows these differences. So today I am going to answer questions people often ask me regarding wood versus vinyl shutters.
What makes Wood better than Vinyl California Shutters? Most buyers will tell you that they prefer wood shutters because of superior strength and durability and the fact that every piece of wood has some type of natural beauty to it. They like these benefits because their homes have beautiful views outside of them. Also, since most homeowners only live inside for portions of days during the week, they enjoy knowing that wood shutters provide long term value because if they do decide to sell, they will be offered higher prices. However, there are other factors that come into play when choosing wooden shutters. And while wood shutters tend to hold up longer compared to vinyl shutters, this may depend on the quality of construction. As far as cost goes, wood shutters offer a definite advantage; however, the price tends to vary with the quality of wood used, the thickness, size, style and design. Many times, you can expect a lower priced vinyl shutter to be made from inferior materials. Additionally, since wood shutters usually require additional maintenance, costs associated with maintaining wood shutters can outweigh the initial expense of purchase. For example, wood siding must be regularly maintained to reduce moisture content to improve longevity. It requires regular staining to help keep it looking good. While many consider the ease of removal when comparing wood shutters vs. vinyl shutters; vinyl may actually be easier due to less weight. And, depending on the amount of wood utilized in manufacturing, wood shutters typically weigh 30 lbs. per linear foot compared to 8 pounds per linear foot for vinyl. Since vinyl weighs less, installers should not have issues handling heavier loads. Because wood shutters make excellent noise dampeners, those who own noisy areas around windows should strongly consider that choice.
