This post includes photos taken during our recent visit to the house of a client who lives outside of our service area but wanted help installing his newly purchased home made wood window shutters. While this project was completed in 2019, many of our tips still apply today, and they continue to evolve. So keep reading because we will update this information often, including photos from current projects and upcoming sales events.

We get questions like “how many shutters should I install?” We get comments like “we need something custom made.” And we see people asking us which type of wood looks better than another. Here we cover them all.
First things first, no matter whether you have a home or condo project, you really need some sort of privacy screen installed. If you’re just building a small cabin retreat, you probably won’t be installing shuttering unless you really intend it to be a full enclosure system. But that said, there’s nothing stopping you from having a nice window treatment that keeps bugs and other critters away while still letting natural light through. A great example of this would be a pair of louvered windows—they aren’t actually shuttered, but they keep most insects, birds, etc., out without blocking views.
So how exactly does one determine which type of wooden slatting will work best and why? Let me begin by saying, the answer lies not only in how well it fits the aesthetic preferences of the homeowner/builder, but also in the function of the finished product.
What makes a good quality wood blind? Well, it depends on what type you ultimately use; however, we believe these factors apply across board:
• Quality material. Wooden slats must be solid pieces of wood rather than laminated sheets. They must be cut carefully and polished evenly along all edges so that each piece functions consistently across the entire length of the blind assembly. Slats should match color-wise, grain-by-grain and texture-to-texture. Wood that’s treated with preservatives needs less care during construction because those chemicals help preserve the wood and stop rot. However, untreated timber needs special handling during the installation process since it could stain walls, carpets, furniture, floors, ceilings, paintwork and fabrics.
• Thickness. Blind slats come either 1″ or 2″ thick. Thicker slats provide greater strength against wind, rain, snow storms and other weather conditions common to northern states. The thicker slats allow for thicker fabric to wrap around them for added protection.

Wood shutters are made from solid materials like cedar, redwood, poplar, bamboo, mahogany, pine, oak etc.; while vinyl shutters are usually thinner than wood shutters, but thicker than aluminum. Both types come with different colors of woodgrain, stains, hardware and finishes.
What is great about wood products is that they can be customized with stain color, color matching paint and other accessories. They offer high quality, long lasting beauty and protection against UV rays and insects. These shutters are generally priced higher than most windows since they cover the whole window frame.
