Casement Window Styles: A casement window style offers several advantages including durability, energy efficiency, ease of opening and cleaning, affordability, among others. Casements come in various sizes, shapes, frame profiles and styles such as double hung, French, sliding, and sashes. These frames consist of aluminum or vinyl and have glass panes or screens made of tempered safety glass on both sides. They are typically installed inside the structure but sometimes outside. Casements are usually built with either 3/4 inch or 5/8 inch thick exterior grade plywood (which is more expensive). Most often these type windows include casement hardware kits consisting of hinges, locksets, weatherstripping and trim pieces. Windows with aluminum frames or single glazed glass panes tend to cost less because metal costs are substantially lower than that of tempered vinyl or plastic laminated panels. Vinyl and composite frames are also popular choices due to their ability to withstand harsh environments like high heat and cold temperatures without warping or breaking down.
Fixed Window Styles: Fixed windows are similar in appearance to casement windows except they tend to be larger in size, typically 4 feet tall. While most fixed windows have double pane units, single pane models are becoming increasingly common especially for areas prone to extreme cold climates. Many of the same considerations discussed above apply to fixed windows; however, they generally cost slightly more than standard sized casement windows due primarily to having thicker framing material. Some manufacturers offer special “double hung only” options where only the bottom half swings, requiring no additional purchase or construction expense.
