1. Measurements
Measure the rough dimensions of the window opening from center top edge to bottom edge including width, height, length and depth around every corner. Then take those measurements along with material type options onto paper and write down them on a sticky note, then put it somewhere safe.
Next measure your existing frames and doors again. Write the exact same thing down on another sticky note, stick it next to the first one and repeat until notes cover both walls completely. When finished, move back and forth between the wall corners, edges, door frame, interior trim piece and glass surface. Take note of which way windows fit well in your house, where the door jambs align perfectly inside the openings they’re replacing and the angle between floors and ground level. All these details will help determine what type of framing needs to be installed underneath.
Also consider adding other factors like roof pitch, roof materials, insulation levels and siding heights. Not only does this ensure proper sizing but it helps prevent rainwater damage during construction phases and improves curb appeal post finishing.
What Type Of Frame Should Be Used?: Once you’ve figured out the size of your replacement windows, you can decide what type of framing style — double hung, casement, bay.. — best suits your lifestyle and space requirements.
